The MDC is seeking a strategically thinking, inspiring and forward looking individual to lead the Department of Research Information, Data and Library Services, which combines the functions of a modern library and research data management for life sciences. The head of the department will be responsible for creating a hub for scientific information management, policy development, and training: from research data to publications. The department will play a central role in shaping and implementing strategic goals of the MDC, including an open science transformation and the integration of artificial intelligence in all relevant processes of research data access and publication. This will be implemented at the interface of science, research data management, and IT infrastructure within the MDC and national research data infrastructures.

Job Description

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for library functions, scientific information management, and research data management
  • Lead a team of currently 6 employees providing organizational and professional leadership
  • Manage the team and develop services with regard to data management, and consult scientists in the area of metadata (standards, conception of appropriate metadata frameworks), data management plans, data publication in repositories, implementation of FAIR principles, handling of sensitive personal data
  • Collaborate with scientists, bioinformatics experts and IT professionals to ensure effective data management, and training of the research community
  • Collaborate with research institutions and infrastructures (i.e., the Helmholtz network, national and international consortia, and other communication networks)
  • Point of contact for coordination function for open science at the MDC
  • Conduct training, workshops, and information events for scientists at the MDC and in the Berlin and Helmholtz community

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in library science, information science, bioinformatics or related field
  • Several years of professional experience in scientific information management and in-depth technical knowledge in library, information science or comparable areas
  • Strong skills in leadership and change management
  • Proven expertise in research data management in life sciences and familiarity with artificial intelligence in the field of scientific information services
  • Familiarity with relevant scientific and management software and tools
  • Expertise in open access transformation and all areas of electronic publishing
  • High organizational, strategic, and social competence including mindful management of diversity
  • Outstanding communication skills and language skills in English and German (C1)
