HEIBRiDS Data Science School

The MDC is one of the six Helmholtz Centers that have joined forces with the Einstein Center Digital Future to create a new PhD program in data science located in Berlin.

Established in 2018, HEIBRiDS is an interdisciplinary program that trains young scientists in Data Science applications within a broad range of natural science domains, spanning from Earth & Environment, Astronomy, Space & Planetary Research to Geosciences, Materials & Energy and Molecular Medicine. It is our goal to educate a new generation of researchers, who are skilled data scientists that understand the demands and the challenges of the disciplines in which data science has become indispensable.

HEIBRiDS brings together six Helmholtz Centers and four partners from Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF), with 32 fully-funded PhD projects at the intersection of Data Management, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, Imaging,  Mathematical Modelling and High-throughput Data Analytics. The training program applies the cotutelle training principle that involves one supervisor from a Helmholtz partner and one from an ECDF partner. Annual meetings with the thesis advisory committee and a combination of a core research program and individual training sessions are the foundation of the HEIBRiDS training program. As part of the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA), attractive events, symposia and courses are made available to HEIBRiDS doctoral researchers, as well as short-term stays to the other HIDA graduate schools are facilitated.

Collaborating Helmholtz Centers besides the MDC, include the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB).   ECDF partners in the program are Freie Universität Berlin (FU), Humboldt-Universität Berlin (HU), and Technische Universität Berlin (TU) as well as Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin
