MDC Welcomes Berlin Senate Decision
Prof.
Walter Rosenthal, scientific director of the MDC, said: “This will enable us to
intensify our collaboration with Humboldt University Berlin and the Charité –
Universitätsmedizin Berlin and also to cooperate closely with other research
institutions located on Campus Nord.” Just last week, the MDC, Humboldt
University, and the Charité announced joint plans to found and build up an
Integrative Research Institute (IRI) for the Life Sciences on Campus Nord. Here
one research area will be systems biology.
The BIMSB
of the MDC is currently located on Campus Berlin-Buch in the northeastern part
of the city. It was founded in 2008 by the MDC with pilot funding of the
Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Senate of Berlin. Medical
Systems Biology focuses on molecular networks of genes and proteins, their
regulation and interaction with each other and their relevance in disease
processes. The BIMSB of the MDC collaborates closely not only with research
institutions in Berlin but also with New York University in the U.S.
The MDC is
a research center of the Helmholtz Association and receives 90 percent of its
funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and ten percent
from the State of Berlin.
