Prof. Walter Birchmeier new Scientific Director of the Max Delbrück Center

Cell biologist and cancer researcher Prof. Walter Birchmeier has become the acting Scientific Director of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch. As former deputy chairman of the MDC Executive Board he succeeds Prof. Detlev Ganten who has become Chairman of the Executive Board of the Charité University Clinic in Berlin. Prof. Birchmeier shall hold the office until a successor has been appointed.

Walter Birchmeier was born on July 8, 1943 in Würenlingen
(Aargau Canton), Switzerland.
After working as a primary school teacher, he began biology studies at the University of Zürich where he received his doctorate
degree in biology. In 1973, he went to the USA,
first to CornellUniversity
(Ithaca, New York)
and later to the University of California in San
Diego. In 1978, he returned to Europe,
to the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich and then, in
1982, worked as the head of a research group at the Friedrich Miescher
Laboratory of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Tübingen. In 1988, he was
appointed as Professor for Molecular Cell Biology at the University Clinic in Essen.

Since 1993, he has lead a research group at the MDC and,
since 1996, has a professorship at the Charité. In 1998, he became the
representative on the MDC`s Scientific Board. Prof. Birchmeier has published
more than 100 scientific articles. He has received numerous awards for his work
including the Wilhelm Warner Prize for Cancer Research in 1990, the Meyenburg
Prize for Cancer Research in 1992, and
the German Cancer Prize in 1999.

The MDC, with a
staff of 700, is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research
Centres (HGF). Scientists of the MDC focus on basic molecular research in the
fields of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and neurosciences. They work closely
together with clinicians of the near by Charité university clinics for cancer
and cardiovascular diseases on the Berlin-Buch Campus.
